TROY — Softball in early April has not agreed with Troy High last spring or this spring. Tuesday afternoon, even though the temperatures reverted back to a few weeks ago, nothing could prevent the Flying Horses from continuing their resurgence after dropping their first two Suburban Council games this season.
Troy erupted for five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a pair of two-run home runs from catcher Olivia Ashline and senior pitcher Olivia DeCitise, and overcame committing seven errors to post a 9-4 victory over Saratoga Springs in a showdown of two squads that captured 2022 Section II titles.
Troy (6-2 overall, 3-2 league), ranked No. 25 in Class A, opened this season with a win against Holy Trinity and then dropped back-to-back Suburban Council decisions against Colonie (4-0) and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (3-0). Tuesday’s win was the Flying Horses fifth straight.
“We definitely have momentum now,” Ashline said. “Those first couple of games, we weren’t hitting well. I think we have more energy now. I see the difference and I think the team sees the difference.”
“The expectations have been very high from the start, but in order for us to get what we want to get we have to keep playing better every day. That starts with having a quality practice and a good game,” Troy coach Sean Geisel said. “Our hope is to get better every day and get hot in late May.”
Last spring, Troy opened up at 1-2 and then reeled off 18 straight victories to claim to Class A sectional title. Tuesday, the Flying Horses pounded out 12 hits and chased starter Jackie Cutting from the game in the third inning.
“They are a great program. For our bats to come around and have that big inning where we hit a couple out showed the quality hitters we have,” Geisel said.
