ALBANY — The stretch of Third Street between Ontario Street and Manning Boulevard was quiet Friday morning, less than a day after a shooting killed a young adult and injured a teenager. Lit purple and white candles sat near clusters of weeds growing up through the sidewalk, marking the site of Albany’s latest shooting.
City police said the shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, killing an 18-year-old and injuring a 17-year-old. The 18-year-old died at the scene. His name was not being released until next of kin could be notified. Albany police spokesperson Steven Smith said Friday the 17-year-old remained in critical condition at Albany Medical Center Hospital. The investigation continues.
The candles are just beyond the steps to a registered day care in the West Hill neighborhood, located on the first floor of a two-story building.
Summer Stafford, 40, who has lived across from the day care on and off for a decade, said no children were dropped off this morning.
“They’re all decent people,” Stafford said Friday, adding the owner lives with her children in the building. “But for the most part we all keep to ourselves.”
Inquiries sent to a number and an email listed with the day care were not immediately returned Friday.
City Mayor Kathy Sheehan’s Chief of Staff, David Galin, described the incident as a “tragic loss of life.” Galin said Sheehan’s office had no further comment.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact detectives at 518-462-8039 or send tips to Capital Region CrimeStoppers.
The man’s death is the eighth homicide this year in Albany. Another 32 people have been shot.
This is also not the first shooting near a city day care. In July 2019, a 4-year-old was injured an unrelated shooting while he slept at a day care center in the South End.
