New York state school test scores for English and math in grades 3 through 8 are out for 2023.
Statewide, 52% of students in grades 3 through 8 were proficient in math, the data show.
In the English language arts category, 48% of students in the same grades were proficient.
The state Education Department today posted the latest scores for grades 3 through 8, about two months later than it traditionally releases the assessment data. While the data is on its website, the department did not issue a news release.
School districts have had individual student test scores to districts since September to help administrators, teachers and parents, according to J.P. O’Hare, speaking for the state education department. Principals and teachers have had access since June to reports showing how students in their classroom performed on each question on the test.
NYSED cautioned that “an accurate comparison cannot be made to prior year’s results.” That’s because the spring 2023 tests were based on the newly implemented “Next Generation Learning Standards.”
This is the third year that the department has warned against direct comparisons of current tests to previous years, according to the Empire Center, a conservative watchdog in Albany. The first two years were related to the pandemic. Now, the caveat comes because of changes in scoring, according to the Empire Center.

For 2023, the math data includes combined scores for grades 6 through 8 that reflect performance on both the standard state assessment tests and any Regents exams taken by students in those grades. Scores on the standard assessment tests only are also included.
