51-year-old woman in critical condition after crashing motorcycle on I-81, deputies say

A woman is in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital Thursday after a motorcycle crash on Interstate 81 near LaFayette, deputies said.

The crash closed down all northbound I-81 lanes from the LaFayette exit to the exit to Onondaga Nation for several hours. As of 11:11 p.m., the highwayโ€™s lanes were reopened, said Tom Newton, a spokesperson for the Onondaga County Sheriffโ€™s Office.

The 51-year-old was the single rider on the motorcycle when it crashed around 6:30 p.m., Newton said. It appears she lost control of the motorcycle before the crash, he said.

Police did not identify the woman Thursday night.

The sheriffโ€™s officeโ€™s helicopter was in the air near the crash searching for a separate motorcyclist, according to 911 center dispatches.

The woman was riding with another motorcyclist before the crash, Newton said. The other motorcyclist kept riding after the woman lost control of her bike, unaware the crash happened, he said.

The rider eventually made their way back to the crash, Newton said.
