Today: Are there enough targets to go around for Buffalo Bills offense?
Josh Allen has no shortage of weapons on offense.
Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis remain Buffalo’s top two options in the passing game. Dawson Knox, Khalil Shakir, James Cook and Nyheim Hines will all return for another season and there are plenty of new faces as well.
Dalton Kincaid was added in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft while Deonte Harty and Trent Sherfield both signed free agent deals with the team.
With so many options in the passing game it’s fair to wonder if there are enough targets to go around. Below is a look at the returning targets, vacated targets and a projected outlook for the upcoming season.
RETURNING TARGETS
The Bills attempted 574 passes one season ago. Among those throws, here is a look at the targets for returning players via Pro Football Reference.
Stefon Diggs: 154
Gabe Davis: 93
Dawson Knox: 65
James Cook: 32
Khalil Shakir: 20
Quintin Morris: 11
Reggie Gilliam: 10
Nyheim Hines: 9
That’s a total of 394 targets returning (68.6 percent).
VACATED TARGETS
Joe Marino, host of Locked on Bills, discussed vacated targets on Twitter. Here’s a look at all of the targets that will open up based on players leaving and the number of targets that were lost from their vacated game one season ago.
2023 outlook
As Marino mentioned, there should not be any issue getting their new weapons involved while continuing to keep their top targets in the same range as one season ago.
Stefon Diggs will likely receive about 160 targets (161.3 average over three seasons) and Gabe Davis could reach 100 targets for the first time as well after missing one game last season. Dawson Knox’s targets could take a small dip with the addition of Dalton Kincaid, but 60 targets remains realistic.
