Pittsford, N.Y. — Just when it felt like second-year cornerback Christian Benford was out of the mix in the competition for starting cornerback opposite Tre’Davious White, he got thrown right back in on Sunday afternoon.
The Buffalo Bills practiced at St. John Fisher University for the eighth time in training camp (day nine of camp including the Blue & Red scrimmage), and Benford had fallen out of the rotation in recent days at the second cornerback spot. Dane Jackson and Kaiir Elam have received the majority of the first-team reps, with Elam starting to separate himself from the pack with several great practices.
Benford was in with the ones to start practice and received the majority of the reps there throughout the day. He took advantage of his opportunity, recording a pair of interceptions to catapult himself back into the race. The first pick came against Josh Allen, who was targeting Deonte Harty on a route down the field.
Allen got aggressive with the throw, ignoring the fact that Harty was boxed in with double coverage. It’s almost as if Allen realized the throw was a bad idea at the last moment and tried to throw it past the defense. But Benford read the ball and secured the catch.
Bills coach Sean McDermott said last Thursday that he hopes the team can make a decision at the cornerback position battle sooner rather than later. He added that the scrimmage inside the stadium last Friday was a good early proving ground for all three players hoping to win the job. The battle will likely continue in the preseason games and McDermott said the team will know when it knows and it’s about letting the process play out.
Here are some other observations from Sunday.
