Bills cut All-Pro cornerback who was McDermott’s first ever draft pick

The Buffalo Bills have released All Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White as part of a flurry of Wednesday moves to try and shed contracts to get under the $255.4 million salary cap limit by next Wednesday.

White is coming off his second season-ending injury in the last three seasons after tearing his Achilles in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins last year. He was scheduled to enter the third season of a four-year extension in 2024 but the Bills decided to release him instead to open up north of $10 million.

The savings won’t come until the summertime because the move will be marked as a post-June 1 release, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. White’s release will carry a $6.2 million dead cap charge.

He suffered a torn ACL on Thanksgiving in 2021, ending his season and starting a two-and-a-half-year run where he played in just 10 games over two seasons.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane said last week at the combine that he didn’t want to commit to a specific timeline on White as he rehabbed back from last season’s injury.

Beane said the Bills loved White and spun the answer toward focusing on his recovery from the injury. He didn’t commit to anything.

“Our focus here is just getting him healthy, more than anything else, to get him back on the field,” he said. “And we haven’t gone down that road of ‘what is our starting corners look like next year? What can we afford?’ Anything like that. I do feel like we have some depth there, which helps but again, a healthy Tre White is a heck of a talent. So, you know, you would always want that if you can make it happen.”
