Bills survive against Chiefs, save their season with defensive stop on final drive (Instant Observations)

KANSAS CITY — The Buffalo Bills extended their winning streak in the regular season at Arrowhead Stadium to three games with a nailbiter, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 20-17 on Sunday evening.

The Bills managed just six points – two Tyler Bass field goals – on five second-half possessions against a Chiefs defense that overmatched Buffalo’s offensive line. Allen looked out of sorts at times and the lack of time and reliability from his receivers made it a close game to the final whistle.

Here are some immediate observations.

McDermott’s defense comes up final stop

After a wild play from Travis Kelce that seemed to give the Chiefs the lead with just over a minute to go, the Bills got a break from the officials. Kadarius Toney, who caught a cross-field lateral from Kelce and went untouched into the end zone, was called offsides. The penalty backed the Chiefs up and the Bills came up with stops on 3rd and 4th down to secure the win. Ed Oliver had a tipped pass on 3rd down to bring up 4th and 15. Patrick Mahomes threw an incomplete pass as he faced ore pressure on the next play.

Christian Benford shifts the tide

The Chiefs had scored touchdowns on two straight drives and were driving again in the third quarter. That’s when second-year cornerback Christian Benford got his right arm in on a Rashee Rice catch and knocked the ball out. Taron Johnson recovered the fumble and the Bills stopped and came up with a crucial turnover to flip the script. The Bills offense couldn’t do anything with the opportunity, though, and the Bills punted.

James Cook role finally crystalizing

On the first touchdown drive, Cook was finally featured in the role Brandon Beane drafted him to fill. He ran the ball one time and then broke free for a touchdown reception after getting open on a route run out the backfield. Cook is a weapon in the passing game and new Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady is finding ways to get him involved. He led all Bills with 83 receiving yards in the game.
