Buffalo Bills grades vs Commanders: Terrel Bernard has dominant showing

The Buffalo Bills defense, led by linebacker Terrel Bernard, was explosive against the Washington Commanders, and came just shy of a shutout in a dominant 37-3 win on Sunday. Buffalo held Washington scoreless until the last 46 seconds, when a 51-yard field goal put the Commanders on the board.

Bernard was a powerhouse and proved why he was chosen to replace Tremaine Edmunds. His stat line does the talking. The 6-foot-1 linebacker led the team with seven tackles, a fumble recovery, an interception and two sacks โ€” which made him the first to accomplish the feat since 2007, when it was done by Chicago Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher.

In the first half alone, Bernard had an interception, which killed a deep Washington drive, and two sacks, which made him the third Bills player since 1982 to accomplish the feat.

The offensive line did not allow any sacks and Josh Allen surprised most Buffalo fans when he slid to avoid contact.

The Bills, on the other hand, sacked Commanderโ€™s quarterback Sam Howell nine times, had 16 quarterback hits and four interceptions.

Buffalo jumped out to a 16-0 lead at the half after Tyler Bass nailed three field goals and Allen connected with Gabe Davis for a 35-yard touchdown. Micah Hyde had an interception in the first half, along with Bernard.

Treโ€™Davious White opened up the third quarter with an interception that prevented Washington from finding the endzone and then Bernard recovered a fumble to set Buffalo up for a drive that manifested into a 10-yard rush by Allen for a touchdown.

A.J. Epenesa pulled off a pick-six and then the Bills marched down the gridiron again to lead 37-0, which became a 37-3 victory.

The defense looked solid all around as Leonard Floyd and Tre White each had three tackles, but Floyd added two sacks while White snagged an interception. Hyde had an interception and two tackles. DaQuan Jones and Ed Oliver each added 1.5 sacks while Greg Rousseau and A.J Epenesa each added one sack.
