Orchard Park, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills drafted Duke defensive tackle DeWayne Carter with the 95th pick in Friday night’s third round of the NFL Draft.
The Bills jumped back into the third round when they traded down with the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round, moving 38 spots from 133 (fourth round) to 95.
Carter is a three-year captain at Duke who played primarily as a three-technique defensive tackle. He projects as a potential backup to starting Bills three-tech Ed Oliver but will compete with free-agent additions Austin Johnson and Deshawn Williams.
Carter likely jumped onto the Bills’ radar at the Senior Bowl. In an interview with The Draft Network, he compared his play style to that of Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett.
“For me, passion and effort jump off the screen when analyzing my tape,” he said. “That’s right away. I play hard. I run all over the field. I’ve bounced up and down the defensive line. I can play anywhere between the tackles.”
The Bills re-signed defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, who is back as a starter next to Oliver. Carter’s arrival injects important depth into Buffalo’s defensive line room. Beane hasn’t drafted a defensive tackle since Oliver in the 2019 draft.
