Orchard Park, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills running back Damien Harris suffered a serious neck injury during the second quarter of Sunday night’s game against the New York Giants and an ambulance was driven onto the field to take him to a local hospital.
The Bills said that Harris, who was transported to Erie County Medical Center for further testing, had movement in both his arms and his legs.
Harris put his head and shoulders down as he braced for an impact on a short run during the second quarter as he collided with Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke. Harris fell to the turf and immediately motioned for help. He lay motionless as the medical staff rushed to his side to help. Bills offensive lineman Connor McGovern attempted to help Harris up off the turf but it didn’t appear like he could lift his arm.
Bills players waited for their chance to approach Harris as the medical team worked to try and get him onto a stretcher and secure his head. Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins paced on his own at around the 20-yard line as he waited for Harris to get wheeled toward the ambulance. The running back managed to flash a thumbs-up before the medical team placed him in the vehicle.
Bills players who were on the roster in 2022 experienced a similar situation in Cincinnati in January when safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field at Paycor Stadium. He needed a defibrillator to restart his heart after it stopped beating two separate times. Hamlin was on the sideline on Sunday night in street clothes after being made inactive for the game. Hamlin has played in one regular season game for the Bills this season.
