Camillus, N.Y. – A Camillus woman accused of abusing her 11-year-old son will serve no jail time after pleading guilty Thursday to a lesser charge, a prosecutor said.
Susan Orendorf, 44, who was arrested on Sept. 20, accused of handcuffing the boy to a bed frame, forcing him to sleep on the floor and not feeding him for days at a time, an Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said at the time. The boy was hospitalized for malnourishment.
She was charged with second-degree strangulation, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
On Thursday, Orendorf pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child. The case was handled in Camillus Town Court, Prosecutor Jarrett Woodfork told Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard
In exchange for her plea, she will be sentenced to two years of probation and will have a five-year no-contact order to stay away from the child.
The boy reported the abuse to a Camillus Police Department school resource officer at the West Genesee School District.
On the first day of school this year, the officer noticed the boy had lost weight over the summer, Camillus Police Chief Michael Schreyer said at the time.
The officer noticed the boy looked malnourished and the boy mentioned something to the officer that also raised a red flag, Schreyer said. Besides the significant weight loss the boy had no visible injuries, he said.
The officer asked other school staff if they had also noticed signs of abuse, Schreyer said. Other staff had also noticed weight loss, Seeber said.
The boy had previously been in trouble at school for stealing food from fellow students.
The officer and staff brought the boy to a school counselor and he opened up about some aspects of the alleged abuse, Schreyer said.
Orendorf was arrested shortly after the boy spoke to the officer.
She is scheduled to be sentenced on May 23 in Camillus Town Court, Woodfork said.
