Central NY man who hid 6.5 pounds of fentanyl in car speakers sentenced to 10 years in prison

Syracuse, N.Y. — A Utica man was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in federal prison for trafficking fentanyl from New York City to Oneida County.

Eric Ares, 38, previously admitted to transporting the drugs in numerous trips from May 2020 through October 2021. He admitted to buying the drugs through numerous trips to New York City.

He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl and to distribute fentanyl and one count of possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl.

Ares was arrested after police found about 6.5 pounds of fentanyl hidden in a rental car’s speakers during a traffic stop.

During a search of his home, investigators seized 62 grams of fentanyl in his bed post, a loaded handgun in his closet and $150,000 from drug sales, according to his plea agreement.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, just two milligrams of fentanyl is enough to be lethal for an adult.
