Are you ready for the 2024 solar eclipse?
Destiny USA announced Thursday that it is giving away free solar eclipse glasses. Starting Friday, March 15, customers who sign up for the Syracuse mall’s mailing list will receive two glasses per person on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Customers who sign up for the mailing list will then be able to pick up their free eclipse glasses at the guest services desk located on Level 1 underneath the Carousel.
A total solar eclipse will be visible in Upstate New York for the first time in nearly 100 years. In Syracuse, the eclipse will begin around 2 p.m. on Monday, April 8, and last until 4:30 p.m.; totality starts at about 3:23 p.m. and the sun will be completely blocked for about a minute and a half.
Looking at the sun, even when it’s partially blocked by the moon, is dangerous without protective eyewear. Special ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses can shield your eyes from solar rays while you enjoy the phenomenon. (Safety tip: Even with the eclipse glasses, you shouldn’t look through an unfiltered camera, telescope or binoculars because that can melt the filter and damage your eyes.)
Destiny USA is one of many Central New York businesses marking the solar spectacle with a special viewing event, partnering with the Syracuse Inner Harbor for the “Solar Eclipse on Solar Street Party.” People who want to watch the solar eclipse from the Inner Harbor area can park at the mall’s pink lot for free.
