Mike Leaty scored a dramatic last lap victory in Friday night’s 4th annual Maynard Troyer Classic at the Spencer Speedway in Williamson.
The victor, a second generation racer from Williamson, closed in on leader Andy Jankowiak on the final lap and slipped under the leader in the third turn and went home with the $10,000 first place check.
It was a bitter defeat for Jankowiak, who had led the 60-lap feature from the start off the outside pole. The surprise of the night for the capacity crowd on hand was the performance of Paulie Hartwig lll.
Hartwig is a 12-year-old modified rookie from Gallaway, New Jersey and his third place finish was his best in his brief modified career.
George Skora was fourth and Race of Champions point leader Zane Zeiner completed the top five finishers. 22 Race of Champions modifieds started the 60-lap main event on the half-mile Spencer oval.
Michael Barnes grabs the pole position for Sunday’s Oswego Classic
Friday afternoon’s time trials for Sunday’s 67th annual Budweiser International Classic at the Oswego Speedway saw Michael Barnes crank off a 15.428 second/145.820 mph lap to secure the pole for Sunday’s 200-lap/125 finale.
This Liverpool driver will share the front row with Dave Danzer, as the 30-car takes the green flag Sunday afternoon. 33 supers took time Friday and the top 26 qualifiers are locked into the starting field Sunday.
The final seven teams will make four lap time trial runs Sunday to determine the final four Classic starters.
Dan Connors and Alison Sload will make up the second row, with Dave Shullick Jr, and Tyler Thompson the third. Otto Sitterly and Jeff Abold will start seventh and eighth, while Mike Bruce and Brandon Bellinger complete the top ten time in qualifications.
Of the 32 supers teams that took time Friday, 21 were in the fifteen second bracket.
