Syracuse, N.Y. — The NBA Summer League games in Las Vegas began on Friday and a handful of former Syracuse University players saw action in Friday and Saturday games.
On Friday night, Cole Swider started for the Los Angeles Lakers, played 26 minutes, shot 7-of-14 overall and 5-of-8 from the 3-point line for 19 points. The Lakers beat the Warriors 103-96.
Swider, a 6-foot-9 forward who played a final college basketball season for the Orange, spent last season on a two-way contract with the Lakers, a team in desperate need of 3-point shooters. The Lakers made 34.6% of their 3s in 2022-23. Only five NBA teams were worse from that distance.
On Saturday, Buddy Boeheim and Elijah Hughes – former Orange teammates – matched up against each other in a Summer League game.
Boeheim came off the bench for Detroit, played a total of five minutes, took three shots from the 3-point line and made all of them. He spent the last season on a two-way contract with the Pistons, a young team with the worst record in the NBA last year.
Hughes also came off the bench for Orlando. He took a total of three shots — all of them from the 3-point line — but did not score in the game. He played 13 minutes and looks a lot slimmer than he did during his three seasons at Syracuse. Hughes played in the G League for the Wisconsin Herd last season.
Alan Griffin, who played one season at Syracuse, is on the Bucksโ Summer League roster, but did not play in Friday nightโs game. Matt Morgan, the former Cornell star, will play for the Clippers late Saturday night.
The Magic (Hughes) plays the Pacers at 8:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday; the Clippers (Morgan) play the Kings at 10:30 p.m. that same day.
