Editorial cartoons for Feb. 11, 2024: Border deal collapse, Trump immunity, Super Bowl fever

A bipartisan Senate bill that would have provided billions for border security and aid to Ukraine and Israel failed to advance last week after former President Donald Trump urged fellow Republicans to oppose it.

In the galleryโ€™s lead cartoon, Phli Hands puts a different spin on Trumpโ€™s book, โ€œThe Art of the Deal.โ€ Walt Handelsman draws a Trump-shaped wall around the U.S. Capitol. Mike Luckovich sees House Speaker Mike Johnson kneeling in supplication before a portrait of the ex-president. Dana Summers criticizes the border bill as too heavy on aid to Ukraine. Drew Sheneman draws the Republican Party baking a border bill cake, only to take a baseball bat to it.

Cartoonists also commented on the House GOPโ€™s failed effort to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

A federal appeals court ruled that Trump does not have presidential immunity in the Jan. 6 case. That prompted Bill Bramhall to draw the emperor with no clothes and Drew Sheneman to depictLady Justice rebuking his claim to be above the law.

Other news events covered in this weekโ€™s gallery include the Taylor Swift, er, Super Bowl; President Joe Bidenโ€™s memory lapses; Tucker Carlsonโ€™s interview with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin; widening conflict in the Middle East; and Elmoโ€™s brush with angst on social media.

Cartoons were drawn by Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
