Firefighter injured while battling house fire in Oswego; four people displaced

Oswego, N.Y. — A firefighter was injured battling a fire Sunday as heavy flames spread from the second floor of a home to the attic.

Around 2 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at 165 E. 4th St. in Oswego, Fire Chief Paul Conzone said in a news release Sunday.

When firefighters arrived, they found a multi-family home with heavy fire showing from the second-story window, Conzone said. Through high heat and blinding smoke, firefighters worked to put the fire out from inside, he said.

Conzone said firefighters searched for trapped people and discovered several pets who were rescued from the burning home.

As the fire spread, firefighters had to knock down the ceiling to spray water into the attic. A large volume of water was directed into the attic and void spaces in the walls, Conzone said.

โ€œOur firefighters did an outstanding job getting to the second floor and getting water on the fire quickly under some very challenging conditions,โ€ Conzone said.

It took firefighters 70 minutes to put out the fire. The second floor of the home sustained heavy fire, smoke, and water damage, Conzone said.

A firefighter was taken to a local hospital after they sustained injuries while battling the fire, Conzone said. They have been released and are expected to make a full recovery, he said.

Four people were displaced from the home and are being assisted by American Red Cross, Conzone said. No one living in the home was injured, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Conzone said.

Firefighters ask anyone with information about the fire to call the Oswego Police Department at (315) 342-8120.
