Former All-CNY QB to become Cincinnati Bengals’ offensive coordinator (reports)

The Cincinnati Bengals have reportedly selected their next offensive coordinator, and he has ties to Central New York.

Cortland native Dan Pitcher will be promoted from quarterbacks coach to OC after Brian Callahan vacated the position to become the Tennessee Titans head coach, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Pitcher served as Cincinnati’s QBs coach under head coach Zac Taylor since 2020, but he began with the organization as an offensive assistant under former head coach Marvin Lewis in 2016.

Pitcher has worked closely with Joe Burrow since he was drafted first overall by the Bengals in 2020. Pitcher also helped develop Jake Browning who took over at quarterback after Burrow went down with a torn ligament in his right wrist during a Week 11 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Pitcher played quarterback for Cortland High School in the early 2000s, where he earned All-Central New York honors.

After high school, he had a brief stint at Division I Colgate before joining the Cortland State football team in 2008. He led the Red Dragons to a 19-4 overall record between 2010 and 2011. His team also reached the second round of the Division III Tournament in 2010.

After college, Pitcher spent four years working as a scout with the Indianapolis Colts before getting an opportunity to join the Bengals in 2016.

The Bengals finished this season with a 9-8 record and at the bottom of the AFC North. Cincinnati’s offense averaged 318.9 yards per game which ranked 22nd in the NFL and they scored 21.5 points per game which was 16th.

Burrow underwent surgery on Nov. 27 and is expected to be ready for the start of the 2024 season.
