Fran Brown says he hasn’t looked at Syracuse’s schedule on College GameDay podcast: ‘Not falling into that trap’

Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse football coach Fran Brown says he hasn’t looked at the Orange’s 2024 schedule beyond its season-opening opponent, Ohio.

“I don’t care about who we play after that,” Brown said Wednesday on ESPN’s College GameDay Podcast. “I’m really focused on spring ball… I am not lying. I have not looked at the schedule. I don’t care about the schedule. If I look at the schedule, it’s gonna mess me up.”

Speaking with hosts Rece Davis and Pete Thamel, Brown insisted that his focus has been on Syracuse’s spring practices that start March 21.

That, he said, is because he wants to make sure he and his players are giving 100% to the task at hand and delivering the best product they can for the university and its fans come the spring game April 20.

The game will be the first look at Brown and nearly his entire coaching staff, as well as over 20 new players.

He does know Miami is on the schedule, but said he’s largely avoided looking at or thinking about which opponents lay ahead of him in his first season as head coach. He said through his years of being an assistant coach, he’s seen head coaches be led astray and taken out of the moment by speculating about their schedules.

“I’m not falling into that trap,” Brown said.

Within the conversation he added that a part of spring practice will be continued roster evaluation, and that while some players will choose to enter the transfer portal themselves, others he will have to cut for the continued betterment of the team.

The next transfer portal window opens April 16, a few days prior to the end of Syracuse’s spring slate.
