Syracuse, N.Y. —The Freihofer’s Bakery outlet store just outside Syracuse is among more than half a dozen company locations that have closed in recent days across Upstate New York.
In addition to the store in the Lyncourt Plaza at Teall and Court streets, outlets have closed in Verona, Geneva and Rome along with four in the Capital Region (Albany, Schenectady, Queensbury, and Nelliston), according to local media outlets in those areas. Many had been open for decades.
Freihofer’s outlets sell bread, rolls, buns, cookies and other baked goods. Freihofer’s continues to supply baked goods to stores and restaurants in New York and elsewhere.
The company was founded in Philadelphia in 1884 and expanded with several baking facilities in the Albany area by the 1900s. The Freihofer’s brand has changed ownership several times, and is currently owned by Bimbo Bakeries USA.
Bimbo, based in Horsham, Pa. near Philadelphia, gave this statement to syracuse.com:
“After careful analysis and consideration, we made the difficult decision to permanently close several of our outlet stores and redistribute product to other locations. We appreciate all of our associates who worked at these stores and are taking steps to help ease them through this transition. Consumers can still enjoy their favorite baked goods, and can find them by using our product locator: https://www.bimbobakeriesusa.com/product-locator.”
Bimbo also owns baked good brands like Sara Lee, Thomas’, Entenmann’s, Boboli, Nature’s Harvest and Arnold.
