Syracuse, N.Y. — A heat advisory has been expanded to cover more of Upstate New York as the heat dome that has set records in the Southwest pays a brief visit to the Northeast on Friday.
All of Upstate except for Western New York and the North Country are under a heat alert from noon to 8 p.m. Friday. The heat index could reach into the high 90s.
The hottest spots will be cities that lie in valleys and plains, like Syracuse.
โHot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur,โ the National Weather Service said.
The weather service advises people to skip outdoor activities if possible, and stay in an air-conditioned building, during the the day on Friday.
The heat wonโt last long. A cold front sweeps in from the north by the weekend, and highs will be in the low 80s and upper 70s from Saturday through the middle of next week. Nighttime lows will dip into the 50s, and the humidity will drop substantially.
