Heat advisory extended for Central NY, high temperatures and lots of humidity

Syracuse, N.Y. — A heat advisory has been issued across Central New York, with the weather cooling into Monday night before heating back up on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service issued an advisory that will remain in effect until Monday at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, a heat index of up to 95 degrees is expected from noon until 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to a NWS alert.

The affected areas include the following counties: Broome, Cayuga (southern), Chemung, Jefferson, Lewis, Onondaga, Oswego, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins and Yates.

The weather service said hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-illnesses to occur. Highest heat index values will be found in the urban valleys, according to the alert.

Drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, avoiding being out in the sun and checking up on relatives and neighbors is recommended. Young children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles.

The weather service warns those who do go outside to take extra precautions by avoiding strenuous outdoor activities if they arenโ€™t in the early morning or evening, to wear loose-fitting clothing and know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
