Syracuse, N.Y. — A high-speed chase of a stolen car that took deputies throughout Syracuse on Monday evening ended in a crash Downtown.
Multiple people jumped out of the car and were arrested, according to Onondaga County 911 Center dispatches.
Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Thomas Newton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Car thefts have been on the rise in Onondaga County, reaching a new high last year, according to police. More than 110 cars were stolen in Syracuse during the first five weeks of 2024, a significant increase compared to last year, police previously said.
A security flaw in some Kia and Hyundai cars allows them to be easily stolen, fueling an increase in Onondaga County and around the country.
The pursuit of the stolen white Hyundai sedan began at 5:54 p.m. in the southwest corner of Syracuse, as the car passed Corcoran High School on Glenwood Avenue and turned north onto Strathmore Drive, according to dispatches.
A sheriff’s deputy followed the car as it wound its way east on Bellevue Avenue, and eventually passed the VA Medical Center and Upstate University Hospital.
The car began picking up speed as it passed East Adams Street and got onto Interstate 690 East. The deputy drove at 77 miles per hour to keep up the stolen car, according to dispatches.
The car exited at Teall Avenue around 6 p.m., turning westbound onto Erie Boulevard East.
It crashed a few minutes later into a blue SUV at East Washington and South Warren streets in Downtown, according to dispatches.
The front of both cars appeared badly damaged in the crash. A green streetlight was tipped over onto the stolen car.
