Honoring our student athletes (Letter from the Editor)

Many, many years ago I played soccer for Fayetteville-Manlius High School, and I remember from back then what a big deal it was for students to see themselves featured in the newspaper. It has been a longstanding tradition at The Post-Standard and syracuse.com to cover local high school sports and select All-CNY teams, but for the past six years weโ€™ve also hosted an awards show to really showcase those top student athletes.

The All-CNY HS Sports Awards show is coming up next Thursday evening, where we will announce winners in 18 different sports, from both big and small schools, along with awards for coaches of the year, athletes of the year, teams of the year, sportsmanship and more. Winners will be announced at Goldstein Auditorium on the Syracuse University campus, and there will even be entertainment from Downbeat Percussion, the Buffalo Billsโ€™ drumline.

I asked Hank Domin, our editor for high school sports, if anything is different this year, and he said his team has changed the way they make their selections. โ€œWeโ€™ve made an effort to revamp the way we pick the All-CNY teams, finalists and winners. We ask coaches for nominations, then we invite the coaches into our office to make the picks,โ€ Hank said. โ€œTheย syracuse.comย staff has the final say, but we spent countless hours trying to weigh the coachesโ€™ opinions, the stats and what we saw during the season and in the playoffs.โ€

Hank says while there has always been excitement in the community around the selection of these teams, the parents, students, and coaches especially love the event.

โ€œThere arenโ€™t many places in the country that have an awards show like this, and parents and athletes are appreciative. One coach emailed me Tuesday and said that โ€˜I always look forward to this event and you never disappoint.โ€™โ€
