Inmate, 39, dies today at Justice Center jail in Syracuse

Syracuse, N.Y. – A 39-year-old man died this morning in the Justice Center jail, Sheriff Toby Shelley said. He is the third inmate to die this year at the jail.

Giles Gerhardt was found unresponsive shortly after 1 a.m., Shelley said. He had been in custody for just 30 hours at that point.

Shelley did not say what caused the death. Gerhardt had informed jail personnel that he was addicted to heroin and fentanyl, Shelley said.

In April, a 43-year-old man died at the jail of natural causes, according to jail officials. In March, a 40-year-old man committed suicide while in custody.
