Chenango Forks, N.Y. — State police announced Thursday afternoon that a man they had been looking for since Wednesday has been captured in Broome County.
The Broome County SWAT unit captured him near his home on State Route 79 in Chenango Forks in the town of Fenton, troopers said in a news release.
The man, possibly armed, had been considered a threat to himself or others. Troopers had urged residents in the area to stay inside and to keep doors and vehicles locked.
Troopers had asked anyone who saw him to call 911 and to not approach him.
No injuries were reported to the man or officers when the man was taken into custody.
Troopers have not identified the man.
Police were called around noon Wednesday to the man’s home for a welfare check, said Trooper Aga Dembinska, a state police spokesperson. He was last seen on state Route 79 before fleeing to a wooded area, she said.
Police shut down Route 79 between Richards Road and NY-369 for hours as they searched.
By 9:30 p.m. the road was reopened but police are continuing to search.
