Man charged with killing 17-year-old Syracuse girl in July 4 shooting, police say

Syracuse, N.Y. — An East Syracuse man was arrested Friday and charged with fatally shooting a girl from Syracuse outside a convenience store on the night of July 4.

Malcolm Barner, 28, was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, Lt. Matthew Malinowski, a Syracuse police spokesperson, said in a news release.

Barner is accused of shooting Karlianne Short, 17, as she was in a group of people outside a store on the corner of East Fayette Street and Westmoreland Avenue. Friends said she was out to get a bottle of water that night.

Karlianne was shot in the back and was taken to Crouse Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

She had just graduated from Henninger High School and had college aspirations.

Angela Short, Karlianne’s mother, said seeing her daughter walk the stage to get her diploma was the “the second best day of my life, other than her being born.”

Barner is being held Friday in the Onondaga County Justice Center jail as he awaits arraignment, Malinowski said.

Barner was previously convicted of second-degree robbery in 2013. He was released in 2020, according to state prison records.

Barner was convicted of robbing a man delivering pizza, according to court records. He held a gun to the man and demanded money.

Barner admitted to making mistakes at his sentencing for the robbery charge.

“I’m not me. I’m with the wrong people,” he told the judge, according to court transcripts.

Onondaga County Court Judge Anthony Aloi said he didn’t want to see Barner back in the criminal justice system again.

“This could have been a totally life-altering experience for you,” Aloi said, “because you could have been sentenced up to 25 years.”
