Niskayuna — A man who was part of the eight-day Cycle the Erie Canal Bike Tour trek across New York was found dead Sunday morning at the overnight camp ride organizers set up at the Jewish Community Center.
The JCC sent an email to members explaining that police who were seen Sunday at the Balltown Road facility were there to investigate the death of a man who was found in his tent early Sunday.
Local paramedics and town police were summoned but the man was declared dead. So far, police have not released information about the situation.
The Erie Canal Bike Tour is a popular summer event that this year drew 400 riders for the 8-day trip from Buffalo to Albany. Participants ride during the day and then spend nights camping at locations along the bike route. It was unclear if the man was a rider.
JCC officials called the local stop a “highlight of our summer” and shared condolences with Parks & Trails New York, the organization that coordinates the ride.
Hundreds of cyclists completed the trek Sunday in Albany’s Corning Preserve.
The ride started in Buffalo on July 9. Along the way, the cyclists, who traveled between 40 and 60 miles per day mostly along the Erie Canalway Trail, made stops in Medina, Fairport, Seneca Falls, Syracuse, Rome, Canajoharie and Niskayuna.
