New music star Tyla is canceling her first North American tour dates due to an injury that has worsened over time.
The South African singer, whose hit song โWaterโ has more than 500 million streams on Spotify, said Thursday that she is postponing her 2024 shows in the U.K. and Europe, and canceling all North American concerts to focus on her health. The European shows, which were scheduled to begin March 21 in Oslo, Norway, will. be rescheduled at a later date.
โAs much as this is something I would rather have dealt with privately, itโs important that I share what I have to share with you today,โ she wrote in a post on social media. โFor the past year Iโve been silently suffering with an injury that has tragically worsened. Iโve seen doctors and specialists with high hopes but the pain has only become more agonizing as has the severity of the situation.
โI am absolutely heartbroken to have to say this but as of right now I wonโt be able to proceed with the tour. In consulting with medical professionals itโs become increasingly clear that continuing any festival or tour dates would jeopardize my long-term health and safety.โ
Tyla Laura Seethal, 22, did not elaborate on what the injury was, but added that she is especially โheartbrokenโ to cancel shows at a pivotal moment in her career. โWater,โ released in July, went viral on TikTok and reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, prompting a remix featuring superstar rapper Travis Scott. Sheโs also leading a wave of popularity for Amapiano music, mixing pop and R&B with Afrobeats sounds.
Variety reports she announced her debut album in November, scheduled to be released on March 22, and recently released the follow-up singles โTruth or Dareโ and โButterflies.โ
Tyla also won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance last month, plus was nominated for a BRIT Award, a South Train Music Award and two South African Music Awards.
