Newsroom invests in future journalists, and gets valuable lessons in return (Letter from the Editor)

Dear reader,

When I was a graduate student at Newhouse at Syracuse University, I spent the spring semester driving back and forth to Watertown, where I interned for a local television station. The trip often felt long and snowy, but the experience I got working in a newsroom was invaluable. This week in the Syracuse.com |Post-Standard newsroom, we said goodbye to our spring semester interns from SU, and I hope they got just as much out of working here as I did when I was an intern.

We hosted six interns and two Newhouse Fellows this spring, and all of them made contributions to the website and newspaper that you probably read over the past few months, on topics ranging from local sports and politics to cannabis news and Upstate travel. These students learn a lot from our reporters and editors, but they also bring a fresh perspective to the newsroom.

Life & Culture Editor Chris Baker also oversees our internship program, and I asked him to share with our readers why this longstanding relationship with the journalism school at SU is so important.

Readers have probably noticed their bylines on some good work in recent months,โ€ Chris said.

โ€œFor us, itโ€™s a chance to work with a host of writers with new perspectives, ideas and interests. And, hey, theyโ€™re a delight to have in the newsroom.โ€

Here are some highlights of the work our interns accomplished this semester:

ยท Brittany Miller worked in general news and wrote about Syracuse Mayor Ben Walshโ€™s fledgling effort to build 200 new housing units. She also wrote about a proposal to increase the speed limit to 70 mph on state highways.

ยท Cassie Abel wrote feature stories…
