On the evening of Dec. 12, a teen on a two-night backpacking trip in the Adirondacks got lost in the Slide Mountain Wilderness.
The 17-year-old from Youngsville started his trip at the Giant Ledge trailhead and had planned to hook up with the rest of his family at the Slide Mountain trailhead. But he grew exhausted due to the steep, rugged terrain, combined with deep snow and rapidly dropping temperatures.
When the teen didnโt reach his planned destination at 5:30 p.m., he called for help. Coordinates placed him somewhere between Slide and Cornell mountains, approximately three miles from the trailhead.
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers, along with state police and local fire department personnel, marched in and found him two hours later, suffering from mild hypothermia.
After warming the teen with hot liquids, food, and hand and foot warmers, rangers guided him to the Slide Mountain trailhead where he was met by his family.
