Syracuse, N.Y. – Republicans kept their majority in the Onondaga County Legislature in Tuesday’s local elections, winning at least 10 of the 17 seats, according to unofficial returns from the Board of Elections.
One race was too close to call and will be decided by absentee ballots and a hand recount. Republican Mark Olson had a 46-vote lead over Democrat Carrie Ingersoll-Wood in the 10th District.
Election officials say they received 20 absentee ballots Monday and Tuesday that were not included in the election night totals.
In addition, 291 absentee ballots had not been returned, but could still count if they arrive by Nov. 14 and are postmarked by Election Day.
Regardless of what happens in the 10th District, Republicans will maintain their 42-year control of the county legislature. The GOP won an 11-6 majority two years ago.
For the 2023 election, only four of the 17 district seats were contested by Democrats, Republicans or independent party candidates.
It was the lowest number of contested seats for the Onondaga County Legislature since it was formed in 1962, according to election records.
In the four competitive races this year:
- Republican Julie Abbott defeated Democrat Blake Carter in the 6th District, 57-43%.
- Democrat Dan Romeo won overwhelmingly over Josh Davis, 75-25%. Davis ran on the independent People First Party line for the open seat in the 7th District.
- Olson held the 46-vote lead over Ingersoll-Wood in the 10th District. The race turned controversial in its final days when Olson claimed in an election flyer that he had the support of CSEA Local 834, the union that represents Onondaga County and town government workers. But the union endorsed Ingersoll-Wood.
- Democrat Maurice “Mo” Brown soundly defeated Mo Moodie, who appeared on the People First Party line for an open seat in the 15th District. Brown won 92-8%, according to the Board of Elections.
In the 12th District, Republican incumbent David Knapp and Democrat Sunny Aslam appeared on the ballot….
