Rochester Wegmans evacuated; man with knife taken into custody

A Wegmans store in Rochester was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after reports of a man with a knife.

WHAM reports a police officer assigned to Wegmansโ€™ East Ave. grocery store (located at 1750 East Avenue, Rochester, N.Y.) observed a man โ€œin clear mental distressโ€ with a knife around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. The store was evacuated as officers responded to the scene.

According to WROC, police were able to de-escalate the situation safely wthin about 10 minutes. The man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for mental health treatment.

No injuries were reported. No other details have been released.

In an unrelated incident, the Monroe County Sheriffโ€™s Office said another store, a Target in nearby Penfield, was evacuated Tuesday due to a โ€œsuspicious condition.โ€ WHAM reports a written bomb threat was found on a note in the womenโ€™s bathroom.

Deputies responded and found no threat after a security sweep of the Penfield Target.

Both stores have since reopened.
