The Madison County Democratic Committee voted Monday night to designate Sarah Klee Hood as the party’s candidate for Congress in this year’s election.
Klee Hood, 41, a DeWitt town councilor, won the party’s backing over three others competing for the Democratic nomination in the 22nd Congressional District.
The other candidates are State Sen. John Mannion, Utica University professor Clemmie Harris and Marine veteran Jake Addington of Oneida County.
Klee Hood received more than 50% of the vote Monday night, as required by party rules, said Liz Moran, chair of the Madison County Democratic Committee.
Moran said Klee Hood had about 61% of the vote, but she declined to provide vote totals or percentages for the other candidates.
All four candidates say they will try to make it onto the June 25 primary ballot, regardless of who party leaders choose to designate as their candidate in the race. The winner will take on first-term Republican Brandon Williams in the November election.
The 22nd District spans all of Onondaga, Madison and Oneida counties, and the southeastern tip of Oswego County. The counties are making separate designations for Congress this year.
Mannion won the support of the Onondaga County Democratic Committee on Thursday night with 73.2% of the weighted vote.
Onondaga County is the largest single county in the district, with about 70% of the district’s registered Democratic voters.
Madison County has about 7% of the district’s Democratic voter enrollment, according to state Board of Elections records.
The Oneida County Democratic Committee, which represents the second-largest county in the district, plans to designate a candidate for Congress on Feb. 15.
The winner of each county committee vote receives access to its resources, including volunteers who help pass nominating petitions for candidates to qualify for the ballot.
