Webster, N.Y. — A wake and funeral services have been arranged from a slain Cleveland police officer who grew up in Central New York and attended Syracuse University.
The wake for Jamieson Ritter, 27, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Falvo Funeral Home, 1295 Fairport Nine Mile Point Road, Webster.
Funeral services for Ritter will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Browncroft Community Church, 2530 Browncroft Boulevard, Rochester.
The New York State Police will provide an escort as Ritter’s body makes the journey home Tuesday along the Thruway to Webster in Monroe County, according to a news release.
Ritter was shot early Thursday morning when he and other officers attempted to serve a man with a warrant in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood, officials said. He later died at an area hospital.
A member of the Cleveland force for four years, Ritter was named an officer of the month in June by the Cleveland Police Foundation. He and his partner, Brittany Vajusi, received the award for the care they provided to two people shot and another who jumped into a river.
Ritter was honored Monday with a memorial service and procession in Cleveland.
Ritter is originally from Webster, a suburban community just east of Rochester. He graduated in 2015 from McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester.
Ritter went on to attend Syracuse University and joined the ROTC program. He graduated in 2019 from the College of Visual and Performing Arts with a major in communication and rhetorical studies, an SU spokesperson said.
Ritter wanted to become an Army officer, and help people, according to Eric Schaertl, the recruiting operations officer for SU’s ROTC program.
“I think his primary goal was to graduate from SU so he could be commissioned as an Army officer and serve his country in uniform,” he said.
