Shooting at Syracuse memorial for man who died during police chase leaves 1 person seriously injured

Syracuse, N.Y. — A man was shot and seriously injured Thursday night near a memorial gathering for a man who died on Carbon Street during a foot chase with Syracuse police on July 4th.

The man was shot around 7:05 p.m. in the 200 block of Carbon Street, said Lt. Matthew Malinowski, a Syracuse police spokesperson. Several casings were found in the area, he said.

Officers found the man in the 700 block of Park Street. He was shot in the leg and taken to Upstate University Hospital in serious condition, Malinowski said.

The shooting happened at a gathering near a memorial for a man who police said shot himself as he was being chased by officers Tuesday evening in the 200 block of Carbon Street.

Around 7:57 p.m. Tuesday, patrolling officers saw a man shoot at someone with a handgun in the area of Park and Oberst streets. The man was chased through Oberst Street onto Carbon Street.

That’s where the man shot himself, Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile said at the scene Tuesday night

The man, who is in his 20s, was taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead, Cecile said. Police have not released the man’s name.

The state’s Attorney General’s Office has started a preliminary assessment to determine whether there is reason to believe officers caused the man’s death.

Cecile said police officers did not fire shots during the chase.

Police ask anyone with information on Thursday’s shooting to contact them at 315-442-5222.
