‘Surviving Paradise’: Syracuse native hosts new $100,000 competition on Netflix

What would you do to win $100,000?

Syracuse native Jessimae Peluso hosts a new reality competition, “Surviving Paradise,” that pits 12 people against each other for a chance to live a life in luxury. The contestants arrive at a gorgeous villa expecting “the summer of their lives” only to learn half of them will be forced to life in a wild forest nearby and compete for a spot in the clifftop residence.

“It’s all about getting to the top,” Peluso says. “But in this game, to get to the top, you have to start with nothing.”

Peluso, known as a fun and upbeat comedian on shows like MTV’s “Girl Code” and Netflix’s “Tattoo Redo,” takes a more ominous tone as she tells the contestants they’ll have to put the champagne glasses down and live in nature, surviving on beans and rice. A trailer shows the group struggling with spiders in their camp, hiking in the heat, an outdoor toilet, and more elements.

“Did I sign up for Fyre Festival?” one female contestant asks. “I don’t believe I did!”

But there’s hope yet as contestants can form alliances and vote each other into the villa if they think they deserve it. For a chance to win the $100,000 cash prize, they’ll have to be in the villa at the end of the competition.

“It was a lot of challenges they had to take, and a lot of backstabbing, man,” Peluso told ET. “Get the knives out! Where’s Britney?”

The show has been compared to other reality series like “Survivor,” “The Bachelor,” “Big Brother” and “Love Island.” A trailer hints at some romance, but money (and maybe 15 minutes of fame) is the real prize.

Peluso told Bustle that the show was filmed in a mountainous region of Greece called Lefkad. The contestants had to deal with 103-degree heat and filming even had to pause at one point due to a “torrential flash flood rainstorm.”
