To the Editor:
I wish to discuss the sorry state of the city’s neighborhood pools. Thornden Pool is my own neighborhood pool, but I have lost all hope that it will be open this summer. This has left me, literally, making a daily tour of our city’s pools. Because when you go to a pool you can never expect for it to actually be open. The aquatics department can’t seem to figure out how to maintain the correct chemical levels in any of the pools that I have been to. I’ve driven from the West Side to the North Side and still didn’t get to swim. I called and complained last week and got a litany of lame excuses. I asked that they suggest a pool for me for that day. The guy said Kirk Park, but it was closed when I got there. Today I went to Schiller. It was closed. I will usually keep driving to find an open pool but today I was just too frustrated. The taxpayers are footing the bill for this incompetence. The pools have thus far been closed more than they have been open. And every time, there have been neighborhood kids at the fences with sad faces looking at a closed pool. And they don’t have the option of driving around the city.
