Syracuse Downtown YMCA closed temporarily after fire

Syracuse, N.Y. — The Downtown YMCA was closed Monday, a day after a small fire in the building, officials said.

The fire Sunday afternoon was on the fifth floor of the building, at 340 Montgomery St. in Syracuse, officials said. The Y has single-room occupancy residential units reserved for men at risk of homelessness in this area of the building.

“Thankfully, everyone is safe,” the YMCA said in a post Monday.

The Downtown Y will reopen Tuesday, according to an updated post.

YMCA officials said they closed the facility on Monday to assess the extent of water damage in the building from the fire. Members are able to go to other YMCA locations, including in the towns of Clay, Lysander, Fayetteville, Manlius and Skaneateles, and at Onondaga Community College.

Even though the Downtown YMCA is reopening Tuesday, the following areas of the building will remain closed or shift locations due to the water damage:

♦ The third-floor track will be closed until further notice.

♦ Group exercise classes will be moved to temporary locations in the building until further notice; members are asked to call or check with the Y’s Welcome Center for updated locations.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this situation,” the YMCA wrote in an updated post Monday. “We are thankful that everyone is safe and we can continue to deliver services to our community.”
