The Syracuse International Film Festival has named the winner of its top award for its 2024 movie festival.
Organizers announced over the weekend that actor, producer and director Dorien Wilson will receive the Sophia Award at this year’s Syracuse film festival, scheduled for Sept. 20-22 at the Manlius Art Cinema. Wilson will be honored at the theater on Sept. 22 as part of the three-day event.
The Sophia Award, the most prestigious prize from the Syracuse International Film Festival, is a lifetime achievement award recognizing outstanding creative achievement in the world of independent cinema. Past Sophia Award recipients include Alec Baldwin, Daniel Baldwin, Bobcat Goldthwait, Grace Jones, Giancarlo Esposito, Oren Lyons, Ron Perlman, Rob Reiner Jerry Stiller, and American High’s Jeremy Garelick and Will Phelps.
Wilson, 60, is best known for his roles in movies and TV shows like “Sister Sister,” “The Parkers,” “Dream On,” “Goode Behavior,” “Living Single,” “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” “Martin,” “A Wesley Christmas,” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” He also produced and directed “The Troop” and “The Steve Harvey Show,” according to a press release.
He won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor on “The Parkers,” while his new movie, “The 4 Points,” won best thriller at the 2024 Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival.
“Wilson’s dedication to his craft and remarkable talent have earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and fans alike,” Syracuse International Film Festival Executive Director/President Michelle DiBernardo said. “His remarkable achievements and contributions to the entertainment industry make him a worthy recipient of this prestigious award, and his fans look forward to seeing him honored at the festival in 2024.”
