Syracuse, N.Y. — A Syracuse home was badly damaged on Thanksgiving day after a fire swept through the garage and spread to the roof, firefighters said.
Around 2:17 p.m., firefighters responded to a possible house fire at 132 Crestview Drive, said Deputy Chief Zach Smith of the Syracuse Fire Department. Firefighters saw heavy fire coming from the home when they first arrived, he said.
Two people were inside the house when the fire started and were alerted by smoke detectors. One person was taken to the hospital and a child living in the home was offered help by neighbors, the deputy chief said.
The flames spread from the garage, into the kitchen and to the roof. Smith said once the fire was out fire crews continued to check for hotspots in the kitchen, tearing out cabinets and walls. Firefighters also blew fans to ventilate the home.
A few rooms in the home were destroyed, and the rest of the house sustained extensive damage, Smith said.
The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, but the cause is still under investigation, Smith said.
