Syracuse police start internal probe after service weapon, other guns stolen from 2 officers’ home

Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse Police Department is conducting an internal investigation after two officers had three guns – including a service weapon – stolen from their Camillus home.

The department Sunday released the names of two officers- Nica Pascarella and Emily Pascarella.

“We are conducting an internal investigation to determine if any rules, regulations or policies were violated in relation to the incident,” said Capt. James Milana, a Syracuse police spokesperson.

The officers are on full active duty with the department, he said.

The guns were stolen from a gun case that was not locked, according to Tom Newton, a spokesperson for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office

The married couple went on vacation around July 14 and had someone watching their home, Newton said. The housesitter came to the home one day with two kids.

The kids went into a room they shouldn’t have been in, went into a box in the closet and found the couple’s Pelican gun case, Newton said. The case was not secured, he said.

The kids took three guns and sold them within a few days, Newton said. One gun has since been recovered, but the service weapon and another weapon – both Glock handguns- are still missing, he said.

A 15-year-old was charged in Family Court for stealing and selling the gun, Newton said.

One of the officer’s gun licenses has been suspended as a result of the weapons not being locked, Newton said.
