Syracuse women’s lacrosse hits all the right notes as old friends Treanor and Tumolo reunite

Syracuse, N.Y. —A combined 701 points in Syracuse lacrosse history stood on the sidelines Wednesday afternoon coaching their respective teams at the JMA Dome.

Syracuse head coach Kayla Treanor’s 393 career points from 2013-16 rank third all-time in school history.

Army head coach Michelle Tumolo piled up 308 career points while at SU from 2010-13, a mark that still stands as seventh all-time. Tumolo was a Tewaaraton Award finalist in 2012.

On this day, only Treanor got to see her team do what she and Tumolo did with ease as players on the Dome turf.

Score in waves.

The Orange offense overwhelmed Army, scoring 13 of its 18 goals in the first-half.

Familiar faces Natalie Smith (4g, 2a), Emma Ward (3g, 2a) and Olivia Adamson (1g, 4a) lit up the box score as Syracuse defeated Army 18-7 to improve to 1-1, winning its 11th straight home opener, a mark that dates back to 2014 when Treanor was a sophomore at Syracuse.

Junior attack Payton Rowley announced her intention to join the Orange offensive machine, scoring four goals against the Black Knights.

“They’re lethal, man” Tumolo said of Treanor’s Orange. “On offense, everyone is a threat. Everyone can score. Their defense has been lockdown for years. Delaney (Sweitzer) in the cage, you have to be on your best shooting game.”

Treanor wanted her team to come out with fire against Army after stumbling out of the gate in SU’s season-opening 18-15 loss at Northwestern, trailing 8-2 after the first quarter.

Syracuse out-scored Army 8-2 in the first quarter on Wednesday and earned a 13-3 halftime lead over the Black Knights.

Mission accomplished.

“We talked about it before the game in playing with a sense of urgency in the first quarter because we really didn’t do that at Northwestern,” Treanor said. “I thought we did that tonight and had a great first quarter. It was our best quarter of the game. Great response.”
