Syracuse’s next inductees into its Ring of Honor: Ben Schwartzwalder and Dave Bing

Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse University will induct two men into its Ring of Honor during the next academic year, celebrating the careers of former men’s basketball star Dave Bing and former football coach Ben Schwartzwalder.

Bing and Schwartzwalder were part of remarkable athletic performances during their time at Syracuse and had noteworthy accomplishments in their lives beyond the field.

Before Schwartzwalder became the most successful football coach in Syracuse school history, he was a war hero in World War II, one who earned a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, four battle stars and a Presidential Unit citation for his service.

Bing is one of a handful of Syracuse players commonly included in the conversation for the best player in program history. Following a Hall of Fame career in the NBA, Bing went on to become a successful businessman, the Mayor of Detroit and an advocate for Black youth.

The two men will join six other individuals whose names are printed on the walls of the JMA Wireless Dome as part of the school’s Ring of Honor.

The Ring of Honor celebrates the school’s most outstanding athletes and coaches to compete in Dome sports. The six previous inductees were Jim Boeheim, Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Roy Simmons Jr. and Dwayne “Pearl” Washington.

Schwartzwalder will be honored Sept. 23, when Syracuse hosts Army. Bing will be honored on a yet-to-be-determined date during the basketball season. Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said the school would choose a weekend game to allow maximum fan attendance.

Selections for the Ring of Honor are made by a committee of Syracuse University athletic department officials. The school declined to identify the members of the committee but said it is made up of senior athletic department staff members.
