Syracuse, N.Y. — After their daughter was born, Nicole and Sam Davis decided to move out of their rented townhouse and buy a home of their own. Then the reality of Syracuse’s housing market set in.

For six months, the couple looked at 30 homes and made offers on 14 of them. In each case, they offered more than the asking price and waived the typical inspection contingency, which would have allowed them to back out of the deal if an inspection found serious problems with the home.
