Tony Awards theater was modeled on Syracuse’s Landmark Theatre (Your Letters)

To the Editor:

If viewers of this year’s Tony Awards thought there was something familiar with the ornate theater in which they were being held, they were right.

Loew’s 175th Street in Upper Manhattan (and now the United Palace) was created with molds from the Syracuse Area Landmark (Loew’s State) Theatre. Another Manhattan theatre, Loew’s 76thStreet, was also completed with designs of the Landmark but, sadly, it is gone.

When Loew’s 175th served as the church of Reverend Ike, I visited its offices and showed them photos of our Landmark. After my visit I was told they referred to our Loew’s State as “the Mother Church.”
