Two prominent Republicans look to succeed state Sen. John Mannion in 2024

Two elected Republicans from Onondaga County are taking early steps to seek the party’s nomination next year for the 50th state Senate District seat that will be vacated by Democrat John Mannion.

Onondaga County Legislature Chairman James Rowley, a Republican, plans to announce Thursday that he will run for the open seat.

Rowley has served as Clay town supervisor and worked for Onondaga County as its chief fiscal officer. He now works for the Oneida City School District as assistant superintendent for finance and operations.

He became the legislature’s chairman in a political coup that brought together Republicans and rogue Democrats.

Paro, 32, is finishing his first term as Salina’s town supervisor. He was first elected to the town board in 2019.

Paro gained national attention earlier this year for his effort to keep New York City from temporarily housing migrants at the Candlewood Suites hotel in Salina.

“A tremendous amount of people have called and urged me to run for the Senate seat,” he said today.  “It’s…
