Weather alert for strong thunderstorms in Oswego County Wednesday evening

A report was issued from the National Weather Service on Wednesday at 6:17 p.m. for strong thunderstorms until 7 p.m. for Oswego County.

Residents may experience wind gusts of up to 40 mph.

“At 6:16 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm 7 miles northeast of Pulaski, or 10 miles east of Sandy Island Beach State Park, moving northeast at 40 mph,” according to the weather service. “Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.”

Locations impacted by the alert include Lowville, Pulaski, Redfield, Whetstone Gulf State Park, Richland, Denmark, Watson, Martinsburg, Orwell, Sandy Creek, Lacona, Altmar, Castorland, Smartville, Bellwood, Howardville, Salmon River Reservoir, Rector and North Osceola. This includes Interstate 81 between exits 37 and 38.

The weather service comments, “If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. for central New York.”
