The National Weather Service issued a weather alert at 4:29 a.m. on Thursday for lake effect snow until 6 a.m. for Cayuga and Oswego counties.
“At 4:26 a.m., a band of heavy lake effect snow extends from Fair Haven to Phoenix and was nearly stationary,” says the weather service.
The warning is for Oswego, Fulton, Fair Haven Beach State Park, Central Square, Cato, Battle Island State Park, Chimney Bluffs State Park, Hastings, Volney, Constantia, West Monroe, Palermo, Sterling, Phoenix, Ira, Minetto, Cleveland, Hannibal, Red Creek and Meridian. This includes Interstate 81 near exit 32.
The weather service comments, “Use extra caution if you must travel into or through this band of heavy snow. Rapid changes in visibility and potentially slick roads may lead to accidents.”
